Helen’s Closet – Blackwood Cardigan

It’s Cardigan month over at Mily Mae Fabrics! Do you know what that means? Different cardigan patterns will be highlighted and discounted each week this month. This week is the Blackwood Cardigan from Helen’s Closet is 20% off using the code in the Mily Mae Facebook group!

The Danielle Cozi Cardi from Sonia Estep Designs is also discounted for 30% off this week for the adult or kids version with the code in the MMF Facebook group. If you are looking for some free cardigans, be sure to also check out the Harper cardi from Sinclair and the Willow from Mood Fabrics.

Along with cardigans all month long, there also is a giveaway! If you sew up any cardigan in Mily Mae Fabric this month, share your make on FB with #mmfcardilove to be entered in the drawing!

The Blackwood Cardigan is a new favorite of mine! It features sizing from 0-30, two cup sizes, two views and tons of hacks on their blog. I saw the split seam hack and I HAD to copy it. I basically copied the instructions and added 12″ to the bottom cut line, skipped the bottom band (naturally, since you can’t have a band with a split hem! 😉) and added a little over 7″ to the front band. You don’t add the same amount as the front/back since you are omitting the bottom band.

I sewed this up in Baby Waffle Knit from Mily Mae Fabrics and since waffle doesn’t have the best recovery, I sewed in some 1/4″ clear elastic to my shoulder seams to help prevent them from stretching out while wearing. I also sewed most of my side seam with my serger and then stopped about 1-2″ from where my split would start and sewed the rest of the way on my sewing machine. My coverstitch was playing nicely and I was able to sew up one side to hem, pivot and go down the other side (sometimes my machine gets finicky when I try to turn and pivot, but not this time!).

I’m quite particular, so there are only a few cardigan patterns that I like and will continue to sew up (the Blackwood now being one of them!). I have some of the new heavy rib knit from Mily Mae coming in the mail soon and I got the grey for another one if these. I’m thinking I’ll do the split hem hack again. I seriously love it!

Happy Sewing!
Cheers!
