Joggerathon – Patterns for Pirates – Mama Bears

Hello fellow sewists! Welcome back to another day on the Joggerathon. The Mama Bear joggers from Patterns for Pirates are up and are definitely in my top favorites for joggers. I have made a handful of different pairs in the past. Funny enough, I have never sewn the cuffed version and I’ve never sewn the elastic waist as written in the instructions. I’ve always just increased the band height to 5″ so I could add 2″ elastic in a casing (still my favorite way to to a jogger waistband!). Since I have only ever done the rolled hem version, it was a nice change since I was able to fit each leg on my projector projection without having to shift things around. #winning!

The Mama Bear Joggers have a relax fit through the hips and are fitted at calves. There are 2 rise options, 2 pocket options (patch and slat), hemmed shorts and an ankle length with multiple leg finishes (rolled, elastic, cuff, hem). After sewing these up, I realize that these are definitely more of a “regular” fit, though I like to consider them a more fixed relaxed fit haha. At least the rolled hem version makes me thing so!

Fabric

White Cotton Spandex French Terry from Olga’s Closet.

Honestly, I have no idea why I got white for joggers, especially when I have a 2 and 4 year old. There’s no way these are going to stay clean! So one of these days I’ll probably dye it. I have some dye already as well, I just need to quit dragging my feet! This fabric isn’t in stock anymore but it’s a more stable FT with great recovery.

Recommended Fabric: Main pants need knit fabric with at least 20% stretch or more. Ankle cuffs and yoga waistband need 50% stretch or more

Instructions

Were the instructions easy to follow?

  • Yes! P4P always has detailed instructions and also a very active FB group if you get stuck on anything.
  • Since I cut out using my projector, I hate when the cuffs and bands are only on a cut chart (not a deal breaker, just annoying! This also doesn’t have an actual projector specific file). At least the cut chart is on the A0 file.
  • When I was pinning the pant front/back together, I noticed that the front leg piece was wider than the back at the cuff line, which I thought was a little weird. Usually it’s the other way around.

Pattern:

DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PATTERN PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?

Yes! Fabric choice will also play a big roll on the fit.

WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?

  • This was my first time sewing the elastic casing. Even though it took longer to sew, I LOVE how it turned out. The elastic fit nice and snug inside the casing, which means it’s less likely to get all wonky and twisted.
  • The patch pockets aren’t my favorite. I’ll be stick to the slat pockets going forward for these joggers
  • Love the fit! They are quite comfortable.
  • If I make the cuffed version again, I’ll definitely shorten the legs a little bit
  • Honestly I have no idea what I was thinking with white fabric when I have 2 messy kids! I’ll definitely be dying these eventually!

WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?

I really like the Mama Bear Joggers and I will most likely sew these again. The rolled hem version is still my preference though! I also would recommend these joggers. It’s a great pattern especially for the price.

Have you sewn up the Mama Bear Joggers? What are your thoughts? I’d love to know in the comments below! If you missed the Halla – Lounge Pants yesterday, you can check that out HERE. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the Lounge Pants from Hallå!

Cheers!
