Made for Mermaids – Oaklynn

I can definitely say that I looooove the new Oaklynn Dolman Pullover from Made for Mermaids since I’ve already made so many! I have more planned, but that would mean I have to change my thread color…the life of a lazy sewist! My mama loves it too and she already requested more. This top has been exactly what I’ve been wanting from a dolman! It’s seriously perfect and is going to make all of my fall sweater dreams come true.

This top comes in a crew and v-neck with wide neckbands, and both of these has an option for a hood. There is also a colorblocked option as well. There are multiple sizes in a range of colors and there’s even a kids version!

The recommended fabric is something with 4-way stretch but not a ton of recovery, like your typical sweater knit. A fan favorite is definitely waffle knit. I made 2 with brushed waffle (and one for my mama) and it is one of my favorite fabrics for this! Fabric with no vertical stretch isn’t recommended, but it’s still do-able. I actually really like it! The sleeves and body will just be a little more fitted and the overall fit will be less slouchy. Fabric with a strong recovery also isn’t recommended.

One thing you might need to be careful on is the crew neckband. Some fabrics just don’t lay right and it very well might have to do with having too much spandex or recovery. If your neckband ends up flipping up or not laying nicely, you have 2 options; cut the neckband so the height is 2.25″ and sew with the regular seam allowance, or sew it up as normal and if it ends up flipping up and sitting weird, just fold it down and topstitch so it looks like binding. This happened with one I made and I saved it by folding down and topstitching. Winning!

Since Made for Mermaids has a handful of dolman patterns, you can easily do some pattern mashing! I absolutely love the Fae cardigan. And what I love most is the fitted sleeves with the super long cuffs. I basically cut out the regular sleeve for the Oaklynn and then trimmed it down to match the Fae sleeve. (You need to keep the top of the sleeve so it will match up with the Oaklynn bodice!) Boom! That’s what I did with my white one and I looooove it.

I also did a similar hack but just trimmed the sleeve length to match the Fae fitted sleeve (don’t cut the width!) and used the fae cuff. It makes the sleeve a tad poofy. I did this with the wide BW striped one. You can see all the Oaklynn hacks over on the M4M blog here!

Both of the versions below I made with Brushed Waffle knit. I got the Leopard from Knitpop, but a whiiiiile age, and the white is from Mily Mae Fabrics
