Constance Sew Along – Day 5: Hemming

Hello, hello! Can you believe it?! It’s already Day 5 of the Constance Sew Along! I don’t know about you but this week flew by. At this point, you should have your Constance finished or pretty close to it with just some hemming to go. If you are sewing cuffs/bands and haven’t sewed that up yet – go ahead and sew those on now.

When it comes to hemming on your sewing machine, the most important thing to do is NOT stretch your fabric while you hem, especially if your fabric doesn’t have the best recovery. Wash Away Wonder Tape or hem tape can be your friend when it comes to hemming. It’s double sided so it will hold your hem in place in addition to help keep it from stretching out. It will also wash away once the garment has been washed.

When sewing on a coverstitch, if your hem is getting wavy, bump up your differential to a higher number. The stretch/recovery of your fabric will determine how much you will need yo increase your differential.

For a curved hem, be generous with your pins! You can also create a memory hem by pressing your hem allowance with your iron. If you end up not catching part of the hem when sewing, you can always go back and hand-stitch the spots down/closed that didn’t get caught with your original stitches. That is sometimes a little easier than ripping out all the stitched and sewing it all over again.

Since this is the last day of the Sew Along, be sure to look out for the giveaway entry post in the Sew A Little Seam Facebook Group! Here, you will post a picture of your finished Constance. If you made more than one this week, you are welcome to enter them both! (but you can only win once.) Make sure they are in separate comments in order to count as separate entries and only new sews during the sew along are eligible. Don’t forget! In order to be eligible for a prize, you must have been an active participant in the sew along. Tomorrow (Saturday), I will draw the 4 winners, so entries will close tonight at 11:59pm mountain standard time.
