Grady Sew Along – Day 6 – Knit Fabric

We are wrapping up the Grady Sew Along today! For all of you playing along on the FB group, this is mainly a catch-up day for you. We are also going to be talking about sewing the Grady’s in knit! This makes such a cute pair of joggers! So lets get to it.

The Grady’s are made for non-stretch wovens, which means you very well could size down the Grady’s when sewing it up in knit, or you can stick with your measured size. The pair I sewed up for Max was a size 2 with a size 2 waistband and cuffs from the Movie Night PJs. Max actually measures in size 18m for the Grady’s so it probably would have worked out a lot better if I actually used the 18m size for the main pants…oops! I also did not taper the legs at all for this pair.

  • Since I sew all my knits on my serger, I prefer to trim the seam allowance down to 3/8″ before cutting my fabric. If you are using a sewing machine, this is not necessary. You can just trim the seam allowance after it’s been sewn to reduce bulk.
  • If you are using the full elastic waistband from the Grady’s, you will want to trim the seam allowance on the top of the pants as well as the band. (Again, if sewing strictly on a sewing machine, this isn’t necessary.)
  • Use the measured size or one size down.
  • If adding the waistband and cuffs from the MNPJs, use the bands from the measured size and make sure your fabric has at least 5% spandex with great stretch and recovery.
  • If you are adding cuffs, depending on the look you are going for, you may need to trim the hem allowance and excess fabric from adding a cuff. If you don’t, you will have some “pooling” or excess fabric at the ankle.
  • Make sure you use the back elastic/fitted waistband cutline on the main front/back and pocket pieces (the cut line that curves inward).
  • You are more than welcome to slightly taper the bottom of the pants in. This will also make it a little easier to add on the cuffs at the end, if that’s what you’re making.
  • If you are sewing the pants version, straighten out the back leg hemline at the bottom.

Those are the main points that I can think of at the moment. If I think of anything else, I’ll come back and add it to the list!

Happy sewing!
