Joggerathon – Halla – Lounge Pants

Hello! Welcome to another day on the Joggerathon! Today we are talking about the Lounge Pants by Hallå. These are a relaxed fit with 3 different length options; bermuda (no cuff), pedal pusher (regular or longer tapered cuff), full length (regular cuff or none). The full length option also has an extra tall length. This pattern also offers an optional double layered patch pocket, two rises and two waistbands (regular and fold-over)

Fabric

The fabric I used for this pair is the Dark Ash French Terry from Olga’s closet and some black Cotton Lycra (CL) from my stash. This fabric does not have much structure to it at all but I love the heathered look to it!

Recommended Fabric: Not listed

You probably can use whatever fabric for the main if you are going to sew the fabric as is but you need need NEED to have super stretchy fabric for your ankle cuffs. Like 75% stretch. Or an option would be to gather the bottom of the leg with two basting stitches, gather the opening to match the cuff, sew together with a stretch stitch and then remove the basting stitches. This would be tons easier than trying to stretch the heck out of the cuff.

Instructions

Are the instructions easy to follow?

  • The main construction is easy to follow but the order of the instructions in general are all over the place.
  • After the main construction with the cuffs version (which is first), it has the double pocket instructions, then how to do the tapered cuffs, then a how-to on hidden pockets, then the hemming instructions. The order just seams a little all over the place.
  • I don’t like that the construction for the pockets are AFTER the main construction with only a little blurb about the pocket instructions being sometime after. If you aren’t reading every part of the instructions, you might miss the blurb to skip down for the pocket construction before sewing the pants together.
  • Nowhere in the instructions does it say anything about a single layer pocket (except for the hidden pocket instructions at the end). The actual pocket piece says you can cut 2 or 4 pocket pieces for either a double or single layer pocket with the same overall shape. However, the only mention of the single pocket in the instructions is the hidden pocket but the pattern piece is different than what is listed on the actual pattern piece.
  • I think the mention of the single layer pocket on the pattern piece was a mistake since the instructions don’t provide any information on sewing the pocket version as a single layer.
  • I cut out my pattern a few days before sewing and I totally forgot the mention of the 2 options for the pocket listed on the pattern piece (single or double layer pocket). Since the instructions didn’t have anything about the single layer, I just assumed I forgot to cut out the other pocket pair and sewed the two pieces together. Luckily I had left over fabric, so this wasn’t too much of an issue to cut out 2 more.
  • Usually on the pattern pieces, the words are usually facing in the direction of how the pattern piece should be directionally facing on your fabric. This is not the case for the cuff pieces, so you really have to pay attention to the stretch and grain lines to make sure you are cutting with the stretch going the correct way.
  • There are some instructions that says how to taper the leg if you don’t want it so wide.

Pattern:

DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PATTERN PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?

Yup! These pants are relaxed and are puffy where the bottom meets the cuffs.

WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?

  • The pants are suuuuuuper wide as is and you really need SUPER stretchy fabric for the cuffs. I used black CL (cotton lycra) and even that barely had enough stretch to attach it to the bottom of the pant legs. I had to stretch it to the absolute max. It would be a million times easier to add basting stitched to the bottom of the pant legs and gather it to fit the cuff. It will still have a puffy look but will be a lot easer to attach. Or make sure you using ribbing or something with 75% or more stretch.
  • The waistband is way too big. I cut on the shorter height line (the taller one is for a fold foldover waistband) and even then it was still super tall. Even though my natural waist is a little bigger than the size I sewed, the top of the waistband was super loose as well. Luckily it was still pretty tall and I could fold it in half and it fit much better like that.
  • The pockets are deep but I wish it would have had a notch at the top of the pants for where to lineup the top of the pocket.

WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?

This particular fit is not really my style so I probably won’t sew it again. I prefer a more tapered leg, and even though it does have instructions on how to alter the pattern for a tapered look, there are other patterns that are already tapered where I wouldn’t have to adjust the pattern myself.

If this is your style, it’s not bad for the price (especially if it goes on sale) and the things I don’t love can be adjusted without too much trouble.

Have you sewn up the Lounge Pants? What are your thoughts? I’d love to know in the comments below! If you missed the Closet Core Patterns – Plateau Joggers yesterday, you can check that out HERE. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the Mama Bear Joggers from Patterns for Pirates!

Cheers!
